HPA: Mostly elderly patients in Covid facilities

As Maldives continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases – Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, has stated that patients mostly admitted in Covid facilities are of elderly age.

Statistics publicized by HPA shows that a total 405 people tested positive for COVID-19 within the past week.

With a sudden hike of cases – the number of patients being treated after admittance at Covid facilities have also increased. In this regard, 17 patients being treated at facilities.

An official from HPA told Sun that one COVID-19 patient was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – whilst the condition of remaining patients cannot yet be classified as serious or not at the moment.

The official cited this was due the fact that most patients were individuals above the age of 60 – whereas the variant of the disease they had contracted has yet to be confirmed.

HPA said that efforts were underway to send samples abroad in order to confirm the variant of the disease currently circulating in the Maldives.

The health agency has also advised to exercise caution over increased cases in the Maldives and foreign nations recently.

“COVID-19 cases in Maldives increased by 185 percent in the third week on June compared to that of the second week,” HPA detailed.

HPA has said that case numbers can be lowered ahead of the upcoming school holidays even, but for that people need to take precautionary measures.

The authority urged to be more vigilant in hygiene and wearing masks. They also advised those who completed both doses to get the booster dose and eligible persons who have not completed the recommended doses of COVID-19 vaccination to get vaccinated at the earliest.
