BTEK Poultry Farm in Addu City commenced the sale of living and slaughtered chicken – a first in Maldives.
Speaking to Sun, BTEK’s Managing Director Hussain Mohamed said that the company aims to do it on a large scale, and in the past one month, they have bred 5,000 chickens.
“Even at the moment, we have the capacity for about 30,000 chickens here. But as a test, we started with 5,000 chickens.”
He further detailed that they began breeding by laying eggs, and that the chicken bred there are fresh Maldivian ones.
“The taste of these will be very different when compared with the frozen chicken imported.”
The price of BTEK’s frozen chicken is 65 per kilogram, and Hussain noted that they received an overwhelming amount of customers even on their first day.
In addition to chicken, the company has plans to sell chicken eggs, and are already prepared to begin as well.
Hussain said that they will be able to produce 10,000 eggs daily. However, since it would be difficult to begin both at once, they have yet to start selling eggs.
“In the very near future, we can begin (selling eggs).”
Currently, BTEK will only be selling its products in Addu City, but the company has plans to expand production, and sell for a wider market.
