Gender: Domestic violence cases involving male victims highest in 2021

Gender Ministry states that the year 2021 marked the highest number of domestic violence cases involving male victims over the last four years.

Statistics released by Gender Ministry show 36 domestic violence cases involving male victims was reported in 2018, and 55 in 2019. While the figure dropped to 44 in 2020, the average rate of domestic violence against males continues to rise.

58 cases of domestic violence involving male victims were reported in 2021.

Gender Ministry launched ‘Geveshi Gulhun’ - a nation-wide campaign to raise awareness on domestic violence – in 2020.

And at the official National Unity Day function in December last year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih acknowledged the seriousness of cases of domestic violence in Maldives, and provided assurance government would increase efforts to combat domestic violence.

Statistics show an increase in domestic violence cases involving both male and female victims. The highest number of domestic violence cases reported in 2021 involved emotional abuse of females.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES OVER THE YEARS:

  • 2018: 347 cases
  • 2019: 378 cases
  • 2020: 375 cases
  • 2021 (by end of November): 388 cases
