Male’ City Council has announced the decision to construct parking buildings in five areas in the Maldivian capital.

In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that in accordance with the council’s Strategic Action Plan, one of the council’s top priorities is to solve parking and traffic issues in Male’ City.

Muizzu noted that the council planned on constructing parking buildings in Male’, but said the project was costly and hard.

He said that the council, following eight months of work on the project, decided during the council meeting on Wednesday to seek developers to construct parking buildings in lands across Male’.

Muizzu said that as the council did not have the budget, they had decided to post an invitation to tender to seek developers or investors to carry out the project under public-private partnership model.

He said that the project will take time, and it will be some time before the buildings can be built and used for parking.

Muizzu said that he does not believe the issue of parking shortage in Male’ to be left attended until the project is complete to be a responsible approach, and that the city council was therefore seeking temporary solutions to the issue.

The city council has decided to lease and sell parking slots in Male’ in order to solve the issue. However, Transport Ministry and Local Government Authority (LGA) has ordered a halt to efforts by the city council to sell 1,000 parking slots.
