CP: No threat even if Indian military personnel stationed in Maldives

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated that there is no threat to civil security even if Indian military personnel is stationed in Maldives.

Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) is currently investigating a case filed over ‘India Out’ campaign. The case was filed by Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed was summoned to a meeting of the Committee held over the case today, and questioned.

At the meeting, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Usham pointed out that ‘India Out’ campaign was triggered by the alleged stationing of Indian military personnel in Maldives.

“When the ‘India Out’ campaign which is being carried out had started, it was under the name ‘India Military Out’. Nevertheless, the campaign is being promoted under the name ‘India Out’ now,” he had said.

Noting that the main concern of everyone taking part in the campaign is Indian military personnel being stationed in the Maldives – MP Usham had questioned whether Indian military presence in the Maldives can obstruct civil harmony.

In response to MP Usham’s question, CP Hameed said that the Police had taken note of six matters as reasons the campaign is being carried out so far. He added that the investigations conducted over the campaign has found no threat to civil security of the country to date.

“We have not noticed in any of our works that Indian military personnel, or individuals alleged to be Indian military personnel, being stationed in the Maldives could threaten the national security or the civil security of the country. We have not taken note of any such thing to date,” he had said.

Speaking further, CP Hameed said that countries help each other in world strategic security matters, with military personnel from different countries being involved. On this note, he added that Maldivian military personnel are also active in other countries.

Stressing that Indian military personnel being stationed in the Maldives does not threaten the civil security of the country – CP Hameed described the ‘India Out’ campaign as something which might threaten civil security.
