State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), under its Sixth Power Project, had decided to develop a powerhouse with a capacity of 100MW in Hulhumale’.
STELCO had made an announcement yesterday, seeking a consultant for the project. An official from the company told Sun that currently the first phase of the project is underway,
The official further detailed that although a powerhouse with a capacity of 100MW will be developed under the project – they have yet to decide which level of generator will be installed. The official said that the point of establishing a power house with a capacity of 100MW is with the view of increasing the capacity in the future.
“There is currently 50MW in Hulhumale’. Interconnection’s second phase will commence too once Thilamale’ bridge is done. Moreover, demand from Male’ keeps increasing,” the official added.
The official stressed that due to the way the current powerhouse at Hulhumale’ was constructed – there is no space to add additional generators there.
Speaking further, the official said that the new powerhouse is planned to be built at the land plot next to where the current powerhouse is.
“We just announced to find a consultant. When things are finalized in the future, more information will be disclosed,” the official had said.
STELCO recently interconnected the power grids of Male’, Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’, by installing a 100MW interconnection cable – and announced plans to add Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
