Maldives records seventh COVID-19 fatality this month, death toll at 271

Maldives has recorded the seventh COVID-19 fatality this month.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) stated tonight that a COVID-19 patient admitted at Gn. Covid Management Facility had passed away on Monday.

HPA identified the deceased as an 80-year-old Maldivian man. He passed away at 4:55pm on Monday evening.

His death increases the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the Maldives to 271.

The last COVID-19 death recorded in the Maldives prior to this was on Sunday; a 42-year-old Maldivian woman who was being treated at the ICU of the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility.

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant.

In the last 24-hours alone, HPA announced 2,609 additional cases of COVID-19, increasing confirmed cases in Maldives to 122,777.     

The 2,609 new cases include; 1,427 cases from the greater Male’ region, 783 cases from residential islands outside Male’ and 109 cases from operational resorts.

Meanwhile, 1,673 additional COVID-19 patients were confirmed to have made full recoveries over the last 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 105,827.    

With the new developments, Maldives now has 16,666 active cases.      

There are 57 patients in hospitals.
