Parliament to reopen on February 3

The Parliament is scheduled to reopen for the year 2022 on February 3. 

According to the agenda released by the Parliament on Sunday, the first sitting of the first session of the Parliament for the year 2022 will begin at 09:00 am on Thursday, February 3. 

Article 84 of the Constitution states the President must deliver his annual presidential address at the opening sitting of the Parliament each year. 

It is the only item in the agenda for February 3. 

In his annual address, the President will brief the Parliament on the on the current status of Maldives, encompassing its successes and challenges, and his plans for the future of Maldives.

The minority leader – who is currently the PPM parliamentary group leader, Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem – will speak in response to the presidential address. 

Parliament went into recess on November 29 last year. The Parliament was recalled for three sitting during recess. 

According to the Parliament’s Standing orders, the Parliament will hold three sessions each year. The first session of is held from February to April. 

The day of the opening sitting of the Parliament each year is a public holiday.
