The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday accepted the candidacy of Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate Mohamed Raashid.

After evaluating the application form submitted by Raashid, EC concluded him to be qualified to contest and accepted the application later in the same day.

Prior to this, Raashid was filling the post of Secretary-General of Sh. Foakaidhoo. Additionally, for the past three tenures, he filled the role of Council President as well.

In addition to Raashid, Maldives National Party’s (MNP) candidate Abdul Hannan Idrees’s candidacy has been accepted.

The Komandoo seat was left vacant following the death of MP Hussain Waheed on December 14. He died at the age of 53 years in a hospital in Male’ City after a year-long battle with cancer.

Hussain, a native of Foakaidhoo, was first elected to the Parliament during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. He was re-elected to the Parliament in the elections held in 2019.

The Elections Commission announced that they will be holding by-elections for the Komandoo parliamentary seat on February 5, 2022.
