Man who defecated inside Addu City mosque released from custody

Maldives Police Service has stated that the man arrested for defecating inside a mosque in Addu City, has been released from custody.

A 47-year-old Maldivian man was arrested last Thursday, for defecating inside of a mosque in Addu City’s Feydhoo, in addition to vandalizing two other mosques.

A Police Spokesperson told Sun that the man was released on the same day he was arrested – subsequent to his health condition which could deteriorate if kept in custody under the advice of his doctor.

A credible source told Sun that the man in question suffers from a mental illness and is being treated for it as well.

Multiple cases of actions of disrespect towards mosques have been reported recently. A man urinated inside the Masjid al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al- Auzam (Islamic Center) in Male’ City during Magrib prayer on October 3. On the same day – he also urinated inside the Friday Mosque and in front of the President’s Office.

 

After he was released from custody, he spat on a holy Quran book at Masjid al-Ibrahim – following which he was rearrested. He was sentenced to 1 month and 19 days in jail on December 2.
