Police have arrested three suspects in connection to the abduction of a Coast Guard officer last November.
Staff Sergeant Hassan Fahmy, 38, was abducted and beaten on November 18.
Police said they arrested three suspects in connection to the case on Tuesday. The suspects were identified as an 18-year-old, a 21-year-old, and a 29-year-old.
Police said they also searched a guesthouse in suburban Vilimale’ in connection to the case.
Fahmy’s family initially reported that he was abducted off a street in Male’ City by four masked men and beaten in a robbery.
However, police said that based on the findings of their investigation, they did not believe the abduction had taken place in Male’ City.
Police said there was no evidence to suggest Fahmy had been targeted because he was a soldier, and that the incident was linked to his personal life.
Fahmy sustained multiple injuries in the incident, including on his face and back.
The case is under further investigation by the police.
