Elections Commission (EC) has raised concerns over the the high number of resignations among officials elected to women’s development committee in local councils.

The local council elections and the women’s development committee elections was held in April this year.

EC’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq told Sun on Saturday that the commission had noticed an increase in resignations among officials elected to women’s development committees.

He said that the commission also faced an increase in expenditure on re-election of members to the vacancies.

“We are noticing that a large number of members elected to women’s development committees are just resigning. EC is conducting necessary work in response to this. The greatest concern is the expenditure needed to re-elect members to the vacancies,” he said.

Fuad said that byelections are costly, and require time and resources.

He said that the commission was working on holding byelections in islands where women’s development committee members have resigned over the past two months.

He said that 11 byelections had already been held between August and November.

Fuad said that it was important that public officials are fully aware of the duties and responsibilities that come with their office, and are passionate about providing their service.
