Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has pledged that they will probe the death of an inmate who was at custody in Male’ Prison – pending outcome of trial.

Public Prosecutor, PGO’s Media Official Ahmed Shafeeu had told Sun that they will investigate the events leading up to the death of the inmate and take action, if necessary.

“This office will investigate all matters which needs to be investigated in relation to the death – and will take any actions necessary as well,” he had said.

The inmate who passed away whilst being treated at Indira Gandi Memorial Hospital was identified by Maldives Correctional Service as Ismail Shabeen, 46, M. Malas. Shabeen was an individual who was jailed pending outcome of trial on multiple drug-related charges from abuse of drugs, possession of drugs to also selling drugs.

Corrections said that Shabeen was taken in emergency to the hospital at around 19:00 two nights ago – following difficulties in breathing.

His condition further deteriorated and was subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit – where he was being treated before he passed away.

Corrections said that the hospital informed them that Shabeen had passed away at 19:30 last night.

They also noted that he was a diabetic patient – who was receiving treatment for the condition – at the time of his passing.
