A fire broke out at Kudakudhinge Hiyaa – a children’s shelter located in suburban Vilimale’ – on Thursday morning, a little over a month after similar incident at the same shelter.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said the fire originated from a room on the fourth floor of the shelter.

The fire was reported to the MNDF Vilimale’ Fire Station at 06:03 am.

Firefighters managed to control the fire at 06:10 am, and completely extinguished the fire at 07:20 am.

MNDF said that though the incident did not result in any injuries, it did cause varying degrees of damage to items inside the room.

The fire this Thursday marks the third such incident at the shelter over the past three months. A fire broke out on the first floor of Kudakudhinge Hiyaa, burning down cabinets used to store children’s clothing and shoes on May 4, and again in a store room on June 6.

The latest fire is under investigation by the police.
