50 percent of eligible population has gotten fully vaccinated

Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) has stated that over 50 percent of the eligible population in the Maldives has gotten fully vaccinated. The Spokesperson of HEOC, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq announced this milestone while speaking at a press conference held this evening – citing that this was a big achievement. 

In the Maldives, COVID-19 vaccines are administered to those above the age of 18.

As per the latest statistics of Health Protection Agency (HPA) a total of 243,370 people have completed have been fully vaccinated. Out of this, 6,755 people got their second dose yesterday – 3,556 people from Male’ area and 3,199 people from atolls.

Covishield and Sinopharm are the vaccines that are being commonly administered in the Maldives – with Pfizer being administered in special cases. Covishied is the first COVID-19 vaccine administered in the Maldives and is also the one most people have received up to date.

Maldives temporarily ceased the administration of the Covishield vaccine in early May, due to low stock of the vaccine and have now resumed mass administration upon receiving a shipment from an anonymous donor – containing 60,000 doses. The administration is done so on an appointment basis.

The number of people getting vaccinated has recently increased following the easements announced for those who have gotten fully vaccinated.
