Abdulla Kamaluddin applies to register new political party

Abdulla Kamaluddin (AK), who served as a member of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s cabinet, has applied to register a new political party in Maldives.

Kamaluddin began his political career with Maumoon. He later became a member of Jumhoory Party (JP), but rejoined Maumoon after he resumed political work.

He was involved in the creation of Maumoon’s Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), and ran for the Parliament with Maumoon’s backing in the 2019 elections.

However, he left MRM on June 30.

Kamaluddin told Sun the left MRM because he wished to change his perspective on politics in light of the status of politics in Maldives.

In a statement announcing the creation of a new party, Kamaluddin said that some national issues remain unsolved despite the people being empowered and the powers of the state being separated under the Constitution.

He said he therefore saw the need for the birth of a new political philosophy to honor Islam, safeguard Maldives’ independence, empower the people with civil liberties, and strengthen social welfare.

He said that he, with the support of other likeminded individuals, applied for permission to register a new political party by the name of ‘National Solidarity Party’ with the Elections Commission this Sunday.

The move to form a new political party by former members of MRM comes with JP member, Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim also leading the creation of a new political party.

Maldives currently has 10 registered political parties.
