Met Office issues yellow alert for North and Central Atolls

Due to impending bad weather, Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a yellow alert for the regions of Ha. Atoll to Th. Atoll in the Maldives.

The white alert issued initially for the regions was revised to a yellow alert this morning at 10:00. The yellow alert will be in place from 10:00 to 15:00.

Met Office anticipates torrential rain and thunderstorms with strong winds of 25 – 30 mph, gusts of 50 mph, and rough seas in this region.

The occurrence of swell wave surges is listed as a possibility.

Prior to this, Met Office has also advised that the Southwest monsoon is will become strong over the Maldives area starting from Wednesday. Accordingly, widespread rain, occasionally heavy showers, strong winds, and rough seas are expected for the subsequent four days.

Therefore, Met Office has strongly advised seafarers to be cautious during travel.
