A COVID-19 death has been reported from the southern Addu City for the first time.
The populated southern city has never before reported a death from the virus but has previously confirmed a significant amount of cases.
Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar said to Sun that the deceased was aged above 80 and was a Maldivian male.
The individual died around 22:45 according to the mayor.
He added that the individual was receiving treatment for another disease when he contracted the virus. He passed away while connected to a ventilator at the Addu Equatorial Hospital.
The news means that the total number of deaths reported today alone has reached 11. In total, the Maldives has confirmed 140 deaths, with more than 60 deaths confirmed in May alone.
