Calls rise for MP Easa’s arrest for domestic violence

Calls have risen for authorities to arrest and take action against Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa, after he was reported for domestic violence.

The violence took place on Tuesday night in the home of Easa, where his former spouse Asra Naseem resides with their son. Easa reportedly hit Asra after a dispute escalated to violence. Witnesses reported seeing her crying as she rushed out of the apartment,

Easa also reportedly threatened to throw their young son out of the balcony.

Asra, the younger sister of Vice President Faisal Naseem, was treated for her injuries at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Easa denies the allegations.

Police confirm they received report of a domestic violence incident on Tuesday night, and said they were conducting necessary investigative work. However, they have not released information regarding the suspect.

‘THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD FACE’

Asra provided her statement to the police on Wednesday, and wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday morning that the last 24 hours had been difficult for her and her son.

“The last 24 hours have been difficult for me and my son Looth. We had to experience things I never thought we would face,” she said. “But by the grace of Allah, both I and my son are fine now.”

She thanked her friends and well-wishers for their support and encouragement.

CALLS FOR EASA’S ARREST

South Machangolhi MP Ahmed Haitham said Easa’s actions have brought shame to all parliamentarians.

He questioned the police regarding the delay in Easa’s arrest.

Others have stated that someone who would threaten to throw his child out of the balcony and beat the mother of his child is a terrorist, and should not be allowed to move freely in society.

People are also demanding that he be dismissed as chair of Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee.

Faced with mounting pressure from public, Madaveli MP Hussain Firshan said on Wednesday that the Parliament has initiated proceedings to remove Easa from his position as chair of Social Affairs Committee as he is investigation for domestic violence.
