The pretrial hearing scheduled for this Monday morning in the case against incumbent Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa for domestic violence has been cancelled.

The court case against Easa was scheduled to begin at the Criminal Court at 11:00 am.

However, Monday’s hearing has been cancelled as Judge Hussain Faiz Rashad – who is assigned to the case – is on leave.

Easa was reported for domestic violence on May 18. He is accused of assaulting his former spouse, Asra Naseem (Asu), and threatening to throw their young son out of the balcony.

He was charged with assault under Section 120 (b) (2) of the Penal Code, with reference to Section 120 (a) (1) on June 3.

Asu later asked the police to drop the case against Easa and decline charges.

Easa has denied the allegation against him and said he had faith in the police.

Following public outrage over the case, the Prosecutor General’s Office filed for an arrest warrant against Easa. However, the petition was denied by the court.
