The opposition coalition - composed of PPM and PNC - has appealed to President Ibrahim Mohamed to allow imprisoned former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to be transferred to home confinement for the duration of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

PPM and PNC leaders met with President Solih at his office earlier this Wednesday.

The opposition said the meeting was arranged at their request.

The opposition coalition said they voiced concern over Yameen’s continued imprisonment, and appealed to the President to allow him to be transferred to home confinement, at least for Ramadan.

“President Solih said he will look into what can be done within the confines of the law,” said PPM in a statement.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison in 2019 after he was found guilty of laundering USD 1 million in state funds for the lease of G. A. Vodamula. The conviction was upheld by the High Court this year.

The opposition alleges the conviction to be politically motivated.

President Solih recently states in a press conference that Yameen remains in prison because there is no reason why he should be transferred to home confinement.
