Drug trafficking charges for 10 men involved in 72 kg bust

The Prosecutor Generals Office has charged 13 people involved in the 72 kg drug bust. 

The PG office said that the drug bust was dated December 8, 2020. The PG alleges that two men named Irufaan Thagiyyu and Mohamed Wisaam led a ring that attempted to traffic and drugs weighing 72 kg into the Maldives via a fishing vessel named “Masjaree”.

Ten people were charged under anti-drug trafficking laws. They are charged with trafficking diamorphine. 

The ten individuals have been named as: 

  • Irufaan Thagiyyu (32), from Dheyliyaage, S. Hulhudhoo
  • Mohamed Wishaam (28), from Alaska, R. Inguraidhoo
  • Abdulla Wishaam, (26), from Alaska, R. Inguraidhoo
  • Ahmed Naseer (38), from Anbugasdhoshuge, Dh. Maaenboodhoo
  • Mohamed Akram (27), from H. Gardenbeauty, K. Male’
  • Mohamed Shareef (34), from Nooreeaage, H. Dh. Nolhivaranfaru
  • Mohamed Furugaan (33), from Parisholiday, Thundi, L. Gan
  • Ahmed Shinaan (30), from Feeroazmaage, R. Rasgetheemu
  • Ali Ahmed (37), from M.A. Kandoodhooge, K. Male’
  • Mohamed Wajeeh (35), from Thadiraiymaage, Th. Thimarafushi

If convicted, they could a prison sentence of five to ten years and a fine of MVR 15,000-250,000. 

Police on December 10, 2020, revealed the identities of those involved in a massive drug bust from a car in Male' City.

Three individuals from the ten mentioned above were also charged with the use of cannabis. The three charged are Ahmed Naseer, Mohamed Akram and Mohamed Shareef. They could face a prison sentence of five years for the separate charges.
