President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih hailed the religion of Islam as the basis of Maldives’ continued independence on Tuesday, as the small island state celebrates the anniversary of the day it embraced Islam.

In a tweet on Tuesday morning, President Solih delivered greetings on occasion of The Day Maldives Embraced Islam, celebrated as a public holiday on second day of the month of Rabi' al-thani, the fourth month of the Islamic calendar.

“The religion of Islam is the basis of Maldives’ continued independence,” he said. “May Almighty Allah continue to shine the light of over Maldivian land.”
