Maldives records over 2,000 tourist arrivals in single day, highest since border reopening

Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has announced that the Maldives recorded over 2,000 tourist arrivals on Sunday, the highest since the island destination reopened its borders.

“Yes its 2000 plus tourists today,” wrote Mausoom in a tweet on Sunday evening.

He congratulated the Maldivian travel and tourism sector, as well as the relevant authorities on the milestone.

“Thanks global tourists. Keep visiting and revisiting Maldives,” he added.

The numbers on Monday breaks the previous record of 1,582 tourist arrivals which was observed on November 1.

Maldives reopened its borders after nearly fourth months of lockdown on July 15.

Statistics released by Tourism Ministry shows over 53,000 tourists have visited Maldives since it reopened its borders, increasing total tourist arrivals this year to over 434,000. The Tourism Ministry is targeting 500,000 tourist arrivals this year.

There are 15 international airlines currently operating to Maldives, with more soon to launch operations for the winter holidays.

Maldives is currently open to all tourists, provided they have proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken maximum 96 hours before departure from their original destination.
