Opposition coalition parties PPM and PNC have announced that they are working to bring a motion of no confidence against Home Minister Imran Abdulla regarding comments he made on the safari rape case in a radio talk show last night. A total of nine parliamentarians represent the opposition coalition in the parliament.
The safari rape case involves the alleged sexual abuse of a Kenyan national onboard a safari near Hulhumale’ on June 26. Two local men were arrested and later released causing an immense public backlash. It was also rumored that one of those accused is the spouse of a parliamentarian from the main governing party MDP.
Home Minister Imran Abdulla had sparked public outcry after he stated that what happened on the safari could have happened anywhere in the public and had been blown out of context, leading to the law firm stating that there was no confidence in a rightful investigation into the case.
Minister Imran had faced a massive backlash following his comments. The law firm representing the victim, Riza, and Co had sent a letter to the Speaker of the Parliament calling for action against the Minister.
Protests were also held in Male’ City against sexual abuse and harassment. The protests follow similar ones held in the wake of the rape case back in June. Five protesters were arrested in today’s protest for violating HPA guidelines against public gatherings but were later released.
