MDP loses, while PPM gains membership numbers

Records released by Elections Commission (EC) show the main ruling party - Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lost membership numbers, while the main opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives - (PPM) gained new members this year.

EC completed processing membership applications submitted by political parties and released details of the latest membership numbers on Thursday.

According to EC, MDP continues to be the biggest political party in Maldives with 52,952.

However, it is 796 members less than the 53,748 members registered with MDP by the end of 2019.

Opposition PPM is the second biggest party with 37,144 members. PPM had 36,054 members by the end of 2019, which means the party since gained 1,090 new members.

People’s National Congress (PNC), which together with PPM form the opposition coalition, has 4,004 members.

Another political party which gained membership numbers in Jumhoory Party (JP). The party had 12,128 members by the end of 2019, and since then, has gained 1,697 new members, increasing their membership numbers to 13,825.

Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), founded by former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has 3,023 members.

Meanwhile, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has 8,178 members, Adhaalath Party (AP) has 6,640 members, Maldives Third-way Democrats (MTD) has 3,171 members, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has 2,902 members, and Maldives Labor and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) has 2,881 members.
