MNDF officers deployed to maintain security at Indian High Commission

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)'s officers have been deployed to maintain security at the Indian High Commission in Male’.

Armed MNDF officers took over maintenance of security at the Indian High Commission from Maldives Police Service on Saturday.

MNDF’s spokesperson has not been responsive to phone calls seeking to clarify the reason for additional security measures at the Indian High Commission.

Indian High Commission has also yet to comment regarding the subject.

Whle reason for the additional security measures at the Indian High Commission remains unclear, it comes less after a fire burned down a café in Henveiru district of Male' City on Frday, spreading to adjoining Gadhage’ Mohamed Fulhu Building, which houses the State Bank of India (SBI) offices in Male’ as well as Oordeoo Maldives offices, causing extensive damage.

It also comes after mass rallies in Male’ City and other residential islands earlier of Friday accusing the Maldivian administration of “selling” Maldives to India.

The police have issued a statement declaring that the event was carried out in violation of Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s safety guidelines to control the coronavirus outbreak, and warned action.
