COVID-19: STO begins building 19-bed setup in Thaajuddin School

STO begins building a 19-bed setup to treat COVID-19 patients in Thaajuddin School on August 27, 2020.

State Trading Organization (STO) announced on Thursday it has begun building a 19-bed setup in Thaajuddin School in Male’, as facilities fill up amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

STO said the 19-bed setup is being built to increase the capacity of Maldives’ health system to treat coronavirus patients.

Maldives has been recorded more than 100 new infections each day, an increasing number of whom require hospitalization.

Maldives has 7,225 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 178 new cases recorded on Wednesday. 4,561 patients have since recovered, while 28 have died from complications.

1,000 people have tested positive over the last one-week period alone.

The country currently has 2,363 active cases. 162 coronavirus patients are hospitalized.

The greater Male’ region – the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Maldives – has 200 hospital beds – in Dharumavantha Hospital and the Hulhumale’ COVID-19 medical facility.

Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) announced earlier this week that 62 percent of the hospital beds are now occupied, and that authorities are working on increasing capacity.
