Kulhudhuffushi City Council has allocated land needed for a project to expand the regional hospital in the city to a tertiary hospital.

The city council said on Thursday it has allocated a 130,493 square foot land space in the reclaimed area of the city for the project.

The city council said that discussions regarding allocation of the land began in January.

It also noted that the land allocated for the project was smaller than the 360,000 square foot land area which was requested, citing shortage of land space in the city.

Health Ministry announced plans to build a 100-bed facility to convert the Kulhudhuffushi regional hospital to a tertiary hospital late last year.

The Kulhudhuffushi regional hospital currently has 30 doctors, including 24 specialist doctors. Speclist services offered at the hospital include orthopedics, pediatrics, cardiology, ENT, ophthalmology and dermatology. The hospital has also been providing CT scan services since July.
