A senior official of the Maldives National University (MNU) has tested positive for COVID-19.

Vice-Chancellor of MNU Dr. Mohamed Shareef confirmed that a senior official of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies had tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

“I am informed that the staff came to the office last week. No contact was made with anyone. The staff informed me later on that some symptoms of COVID-19 were being identified. The staffer then informed the HPA and was awaiting tests.” Said Dr. Shareef.

Locations of frequent use across the faculty were disinfected immediately following the confirmed case, said Dr. Shareef who said that only administrative staffers would come to work now that the university was closed.

“It does not seem that the staff was infected from within the university, based on the phone conversation we had. However, we can only be sure when the contact tracing is complete. It seems that the staff was infected in another way, perhaps public transport or a family member.” Said Dr. Shareef.

A staff of the Prosecutor General’s Office also tested positive last week while two employees of the Family Court also tested positive for the virus on Friday.
