Weather conditions in the South India Sea may lead to severe tidal waves and sea swells affecting some islands in the Maldives, the Meteorological Office (Met Office) has warned.

Met Office said that the islands of southern and central Maldives may experience tidal waves as a result of the severe weather conditions of the South India Sea, especially during high tide.

Residents living near coastal areas of islands are to remain alert over the tidal waves. Some islands of the Maldives have been affected by tidal waves since last Sunday. Ankle deep flooding was experienced in some islands, according to some residents. Seagoing vessels inside harbors were also damaged due to the tidal waves.
