Asst. Commissioner expresses concern over rhetoric to undermine Police

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Phairoosch.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Phairoosch has expressed concern for repeated rhetoric by some individuals that undermine the entire institution of Police.

The ACP tweeted today that some in positions of responsibility and power described the institution of police as a ‘pack’ of criminals which resulted in the erosion of public faith. It also demoralized the institution and officers individually.

“When people in public offices continuously barrage the police institution as a felonious pack, it not only erodes public confidence in the police but also demoralizes the officers,”

“That weakens the entire system. Provide directions and ensure accountability (which is) a better option.” Said the ACP

The tweet by the ACP comes at a time when the parliament is presented with a bill for police reform. Many MPs who spoke about the bill have said that there are police who are involved in wrongful acts which are not investigated thoroughly.

MP for Maradhoo Ibrahim Shareef said that many MPs speaking about the bill were speaking ‘personally’ to defame the institution.

MP Shareef had said that the work of the parliament and MPs should be to correct things without making it personal and destroying the name of the institution, which he described was something he couldn’t agree with even though his own party members were behind it.
