COVID-19: Measures lifted in all islands except Male' City

Measures taken in light of COVID-19 in the islands of Maldives has been lifted, with the exception of the capital and most populated city of Male’.

The government declared a public health emergency on March 12 due to COVID-19.

The Director-General of Public Health ordered the measures for all islands of the country.

The entire country was placed under a travel ban after a case of COVID-19 was identified in the capital on April 15 for fears of the virus spreading to other islands of the country. Subsequently, the capital was also placed under lockdown. 

However, the virus was discovered in just a handful of islands where most islands produced just a few number of cases. 

The measures included social distancing and suspension of community activities as well as.

However, the measures were lifted in a signed order by the Director-General tonight. All islands of the country barring Male’ City, have been returned to normal. Male’ City is also set to enter the second phase of easements regarding the COVID-19 measures.
