161 houses in Addu report flood damage amid stormy weather

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has announced 161 houses have reported damages due to torrential rain and flooding in Addu City over the past two days.

MNDF Southern Area Commander Colonel Ibrahim Rasheed said on Friday that the MNDF was working hard to mitigate the damage from the severe weather conditions affecting southern Maldives.

He said that torrential rain over Addu City over the past 48 hours had flooded roads and houses.

161 houses reported flood damage and Feydhoo has been identified as the worst-hit district, said the Commander.

97 houses in Feydhoo, 28 houses in Hithadhoo, 24 houses in Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and 12 houses in Maradhoo reported flood damage.

“While all these houses reported damages, we were able to attend to only a few of the houses. It’s because our priority was to drain the water from the roads which were extensively flooded,” said the Commander.

He said the MNDF Southern Area Command had utilized all its resources to draining flood water from areas of Addu City, and that the MNDF had also stacked sandbags against the entrances of houses in the process.

The MNDF stacked 58 sacks of sandbags against the entrances of 11 houses in Feydhoo, 24 sacks of sand against the entrances of six houses in Hithadhoo, and sacks of sand in one house in Maradhoo-Feydhoo.

Houses in Feydhoo reported damages to furniture and household appliances due to flooding.

Torrential rain has also been affecting G. A. Atoll and G. Dh. Atoll. According to MNDF, Thinadhoo, Rathafandhoo and Gadhdhoo have reported extensive damages.
