President: Virus cases may increase within next two weeks

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that health professionals in the Maldives expect a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases within the next two weeks.

The President was addressing the nation when he made the remarks. The President advised the public to remain alert and aware regarding a possible intensification of the current situation.

“So, the next two weeks is a time we have to work extremely carefully and thoughtfully, The hope that we can overcome this virus swiftly, with what we do in this period, is high.” Said the President.

President Solih also stated that the country was in dire need of medical professionals and called on those medical professionals who are on the sidelines or retired to also come out to serve the nation.

“I state that this is the time for you to return to service. The country needs your service very much. Those working in private health institutions, your assistance is also needed very much.” Said the President.

He added that hope should not be lost even if the number of positive cases increased, before adding that the current efforts had ensured that the virus had not spiraled out of control in the country.

“The reason that the virus has not spread as quickly as we previously thought, god willing, is because of the action implemented by the government on the advice of health professionals, and the cooperation by the citizens to the advice of the health professionals.” Said President Solih.

The President thanked the citizens for the patience and perseverance of the citizens during this difficult time and the cooperation of the citizens. He also thanked the frontline figures who working day and night away from their families to eradicate the virus from the country.

The Maldives has so far confirmed 541 cases of the virus with just one death.
