Maldives making progress in flattening the curve

National Emergency Operations Center, on Friday, announced social distancing measures was playing an imperative role in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Maldives.

At the NEOC press briefing on Friday evening, spokesperson Mabrouq Azeez shared a graph which compares the actual virus numbers with projections on virus number with 25 percent compliance with social distancing measures and 75 percent compliance with social distancing measures.

The actual numbers is now close to the 75 percent compliance numbers, which the health authorities had been aiming for.

The red line depicts the projected virus numbers at 25 percent compliance to social distancing measures, the white line depicts actual virus numbers, and the blue line depicts virus numbers at 75 percent compliance to social distancing measures.

An earlier model prepared by Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows as many as 2,000 may die from COVID-19 in Maldives if people fail to stay home or comply with other social distancing measures.

Maldivian capital, Male’ City identified its first virus case on April 15, leading to a lockdown on the greater Male’ area and a ban on all non-essential travel between Maldivian islands. Virus cases in the capital alone stands at 108, and cases nationwide stands at 129.
