Maldivian authorities, on Wednesday, began disinfecting the streets of Hulhumale’ with chlorine to protect residents of the populous suburb from a possible local outbreak of the new coronavirus.
The project is Hulhumale’ is collaboration between Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and Male’ City Council.
It comes after HDC disinfected the bus stops in Hulhumale’ last week.
It also comes after a similar project, run by Male’ City Council and MNDF, to disinfect the streets of Male’ City, on Monday.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), meanwhile, has also run similar projects to disinfect not only the rest rooms, terminals and other passenger waiting areas in Velana International Airport (VIA), but also the roads and other open areas.
13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, all of whom are foreign nationals who were either working or vacationing in resorts or safaris. Of the 13 people, five were from Kuredu Island Resort, two from Sandies Bathala, two from Kuramathi Island Resort, two from Anantara Dhigu, and two from Island Safari-1.
Five have since recovered, but continue to be closely monitored in isolation facilities.
Maldivian health authorities have warned the recoveries of the five patients, and the success in containing the virus so far did not make the risk the virus posed to the general population any less.
People have been urged to remain vigilant and stay at home.
