4 arrested over the gangrape of a minor

Four people have been arrested over the gangrape of a minor in an island in the central region of Maldives.

A Police media official stated that those arrested were aged 21, 18 and two aged 19. The case reported to Police last night. The victim was reportedly aged 14.

If found guilty, a crime of that stature would carry a sentence of 20 to 25 years in prison.

The number of sexual crimes being reported in the country has risen significantly since the case of a toddler abused by elderly family members came to light on January 15, 2020.
