Police have revealed that a recent case of mugging reported in Male’ city was faked and the money was stolen by the alleged victim of the attack.
The case reported on December 26, 2019, alleged that an employee of a tourism operator in the Maldives was kidnapped and robbed on nearly MVR 130,000.
Police investigations concluded that the alleged victim misled the authorities with the facts of the case. The employee later admitted to Police that the whole case was fabricated when Police searched his residence under a court order.
Authorities found USD 8000 from the residence. When asked to explain the huge amount of money, the man admitted that he had misled the Police and that the mudding did not occur as reported.
He reportedly hid the money before changing the money into US dollars and even admitted to using some of the money he had stolen.
The matter is still under investigation by the Police
