Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened application for the primary to select its candidates for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
The ruling party opened application for the primary on Monday.
Interested members have been asked to submit their application forms to the MDP Secretariat by January 10.
Only those who are registered members of MDP by the end of this year are eligible to contend in the primary as well as to vote in the primary.
Local Council Elections is scheduled to be held on April 4.
According to an earlier timeline released by MDP, the party will release the voters’ list for its primary on January 7, will award three days for submission of complaints, and then release the final voters’ list on January 15.
The candidates’ list will be released on January 15, and the primary will be held on January 31.
The Local Council Elections will see the Maldivian people elect 980 councilors for island councils, atoll councils and city councils. The recent legislative amendment to reserve one-third of council seats for women means 384 of the councilors will be women.
