Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal has spoken in a manner that indicated his belief that the capital Male’ city is not even close to being overcrowded and still needs more services to be established in order to be defined as fully developed.

At a time when calls to establish a rent control system in the city have been heightened, the Minister tweeted last night that Male’ city is defined as Hulhumale’ phase 2, Villimale’ (Villingili), Gulhimale’ (Gulhifalhu) and Thilamale’ (Thilafushi).

With the inclusion of these areas, the Minister stated that Male’ will become a large metropolitan area, which meant that the solution was to establish and develop different standards of housing, as well as public transport, green areas, shopping malls, cinemas.

Increasing housing projects in other areas of the country to reduce the number of people who are forced to migrate to the capital is a pledge made by the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Critics were quick to point out that the Minister’s tweet was completely against the decentralization policies of the administration he belongs to.
