The Criminal Court has extended the remand of the three suspects arrested from R. Maduvvari.

The three suspects had been arrested on December 18, on day one of the special operation, codenamed Operation Asseyri, launched by the police to curb religious extremism in Maduvvari.

The three suspects - identified by the police as a 29-year-old man, a 30-year-old man and a 34-year-old man – were brought before the Criminal Court for an extension to their remand this Saturday.

The court has remanded all three to 10 more days in police custody.

The police had launched its operation in Maduvvari on grounds of religious extremism, religious separatism, denial of constitutional rights and exploitation of women and children, and spread of pro-terror propaganda and recruitment of locals for terrorist organizations in the island.

The police, in addition to the three arrests, raided several private residences and boats and reported the seizure of electronic evidence and doctored marriage certificates.
