United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer will arrive in the Maldives on November 17 on an invitation of the Maldivian government.
The one week visit by Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer will see him hold meetings with key government officials, MPs, senior members of the judiciary, civil societies, human rights activists, lawyers, and attorneys, as well as the victims of inhumane and cruel acts and their families.
The Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer will also visit centers in the country designated to house people in need of special care in areas of health, immigration, criminal justice.
The United Nations noted in announcing the visit by the Special Rapporteur, the Maldivian government’s commitment and pledge made to the UN to take steps to ensure that the inhumane and degrading events and acts of the past that occurred in the country would not be repeated.
The Special Rapporteur on torture Prof. Nils Melzer is a well known international legal scholar and was appointed to the post of Special Rapporteur on torture in November 2016.
