Speaker of Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that the item found in the food of a parliamentarian on Monday was not a contraceptive, put plastic wrapping used to cover food.
Several media outlets carried reports on Monday of a condom being found in the food of Naufaru MP Ahmed Shiyam.
Speaker Nasheed announced this Tuesday that he had personally inspected the item, and discovered it wasn’t a condom, but merely a piece of plastic wrapping.
“The item found in the food here yesterday wasn’t an item used as a contraceptive. What was found in the food, by my estimation, because I inspected and investigated it. From what I found, it was a piece from the plastic or rubber wrapping which was used to cover the food,” said Nasheed.
He said that the fact that a piece of plastic wrapping had gotten into the food itself was unacceptable.
Nasheed said he will work with the Secretary-General and General Committee to put stricter quality control measures for the food provided to parliamentarians.
The party which caters food for parliamentarians is selected through a bidding process. However, the identity of the private caterer is kept confidential.
