Position of Information Commissioner falls vacant

The position of the Information Commissioner has fallen vacant after the term of office of the commissioner lapsed.

The first Information Commissioner, Abdul Aziz Jamaal Abubakur who was a former parliamentary member was appointed to the post on June 22, 2014. 

According to the law, the term of office of the Information Commissioner is five years and is set to lapse this Monday, July 22.

The President’s Office had announced for interested candidates to apply for the post on July 10, and have stated that they had received nine applications for the post. The President’s Office has yet to dislose the names of the applicants and is yet to submit the names to Parliament.

The Information Commissioner’s Office was established on July 13, 2014 under Article 29 of the Constitution and the Right to Information Act, with the purpose of increasing accessibility to records and information from State institutions.
