Maldives-EU to have yearly high-level meetings

Maldives and European Union (EU) has agreed to hold annual meetings at senior officials’ level.

The decision was made during Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid’s meeting with Federica Mogherini – the Vice President of European Commission and EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in Brussels, Belgium, last Friday.

Maldives and EU does not have a formal framework agreement, and has been having consultations in the form of EU Policy Dialogue, were Heads of missions from the EU, accredited to the Maldives engage in annual policy discussions with the Maldivian government.

During Minister Shahid’s meeting with Federica Mogherini, EU pledged support to Maldives on its path of democracy and socio-economic development.

Both senior officials also pledged further cooperation in environmental protection and climate change.
