Ministry of Finance has deposited the funds from the State budget due to main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), in its entirety.
An official from Finance Ministry confirmed to ‘Sun’ that the office has deposited MVR 9.2 million to PPM has per Elections Commission (EC)’s request. The official added that the deposit was made within three working days of EC’s request.
PPM had not been on the initial list political parties due funds by the State which was released by EC on May 16. The request to release funds to PPM was made later, on May 26.
Funds from the State budget are awarded to political parties which exceed 10,000 in membership numbers.
Maldives currently has nine registered political parties, only four of which qualified for funds by the State this year.
POLITICAL PARTY FUND ALLOCATION:
Total MVR 26.2 million was allocated in the State budget for 2019 for distribution to political parties.
