Shareef to resign from EC after Council Elections

Chair of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef has revealed plans to resign from the commission after the Local Government Elections of 2020.

In an exclusive interview to PSM, Shareef stated that he is resigning from the EC because he cannot take part in political activities while being a member of the Commission.

Shareef was the MP of Thimarafushi constituency and actively participated in the political activities of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the past.

“We are now making preparations for the Council Elections. Instead of vacating the position for the elections, I plan to resign after the elections,” stated Shareef.

After a failed Parliamentary bid in 2014, Shareef, a teacher by profession, was appointed as a Deputy Minister of Education and later, Managing Director of FENAKA Corporation in 2016 in the Yameen Administration.

Shareef also filled in the position of Secretary General in Yameen's now-dissolved party People's Alliance (PA),

Shareef was seen as a close ally of President Yameen until the announcement of the results of the Presidential Elections. However, since the relationship between the two have been rough.
