HPV vaccination campaign launched in Maldives

A Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination campaign has been launched Maldives.

A ceremony was held at Thajudeen School to launch the vaccination campaign, this Thursday morning.

Certificates were awarded to three students of Thajudeen School for being the first three girls to be vaccinated.

The vaccination campaign will be held until the 21st of June 2019. 

Health Protection Agency reports the vaccination will be administered to girls between the age of 10 and 16 years. HPV vaccine will also be included in the national vaccine table.

HPV vaccination for cervical cancer provides protection against types 16 and 18 of HVP.

The Human Papilloma Virus is the main cause of cervical cancer. HVP types 16 and 17 are the two types of HVP found in the majority of cervical cancer cases.

HPA reports that HVP is the most common cause of cervical cancer.

Introduction of HPV vaccination for cervical cancer is one of the 100-day pledges by the current administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
