Police use pepper spray to disperse crowd inside IGMH

Maldives Police Service has used pepper spray to disperse the crowd of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s supporters gathered inside Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The crowd had gathered inside IGMH after Yameen was taken to the hospital from jail this Wednesday evening.

Those at the hospital include interim leader of People’s National Congress (PNC), MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla; parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik; MP Abdulla Khaleel; and leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed).

Yameen’s attorney, Abdulla Shiyaz reports he was taken to the hospital at approximately 4:15 pm.

He said the reason for the hospital visit wasn’t clear, but confirmed the request didn’t come from Yameen himself.

“President Yameen was taken to IGMH at approximately 4:15 today. He wasn’t taken to IGMH at him request,” said Shiyaz.
